Updated ranking of the 50 best movies on Amazon Prime Video for May 2017, including Oscar winners Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight.

The month of May could be the best month for marquee new movie releases on Amazon Prime Video in a long time. Two of the new movies released over the month combined to win five Oscars at this year’s Academy Awards and that’s where our update for the 50 best movies on Amazon Prime Video begins. Manchester by the Sea will be released on May 5 and Moonlight will be released on May 21.

Amazon Original movie Manchester by the Sea took home the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Kenneth Lonergan, who was also nominated for Best Director. The movie also saw Casey Affleck take home the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler and Lucas Hedges also star in the emotionally gripping movie.

Manchester by the Sea was also nominated for Best Picture but that honor went to Moonlight. After the Oscar was mistakenly announced for La La Land, Moonlight was rightly announced as the winner. In addition to winning Best Picture, Moonlight took home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney and Mahershala Ali won for Best Performance by an actor in a Supporting Role.

Adding both of these Oscar-winning movies within 2.5 weeks of each other is a significant coup for the streaming service. When you consider rival Netflix doesn’t have many marquee movies, this is a big step toward narrowing the gap.

May also sees several James Bond movies come to Amazon Prime Video. Dr. No, From Russia With Love, For Your Eyes Only, Licence to Kill, Moonraker, A View to Kill, Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies all arrive on May 1.

Other notable new movies in May you may want to watch include The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, Winter’s Bone and A Fistful of Dollars.
